About Gillygate
Situated just outside the medieval city walls, Gillygate is a street of very varied shops and businesses including a large variety of interesting places to eat and drink.
The street, which takes its name from the now demolished medieval church of St Giles, forms an important road link between the Bootham district and the area around York St John which is York’s second university.
Another very pleasant street in this area is Lord Mayor’s Walk which was planted with mature trees and re-named early in the 18th century to reflect its use as a promenading street for the wealthy landowners.
If you leave the city through Bootham Bar ( the oldest city gateway), you can enjoy the hustle and bustle of Gillygate and then stroll along Lord Mayor’s Walk with its fabulous views of the city walls, including Robin Hood Tower, and then return to the city through Monk Bar( the tallest city gateway).
